iriver ChromeX iMP-150 CD/MP3 Player with 120-Second Anti-Skip and Upgradeable Firmware Review

I bought this player as a replacement for RioVolt SP100, which finally died on me. I was a little sceptical, as the reviews weren't always great. The first unit I got was DOA, which made me pretty sceptical. But Amazon was great - they replaced the product promptly and even paid for the return shipping. pAfter that my luck changed for the better. The player is excellent. It is actually better than Rio's SP100. The display is much more informative, with bit rate and volume levels, and other things displayed instead of stupid running stick figures that SP100 had at the bottom. The menus have plenty of options to play with. New options are available through the upgraded firmware, but honestly - I never bothered. I am still running with the original 1.03 firmware, and it's working great for me. pFor listening to the audiobooks, the player has a convinient resume feature that re-starts your audio track at the same exact spot where you stopped it (instead of going to the begginning of the disc or the beginning of the track as some other players do). With updated firmware you are supposed to be able to sort your tracks by name, tag, physical order or recording, etc. pThe sound quality is good. I am not very picky though, so YMMV.pThe remote works fine for me. It's not the silly four-way "rocker" where you always push the wrong button. pThe player works in regular AA batteries. I like that, because I can use rechargable ones or disposables. The unit doesn't charge the batteries, so you need an external charger, but I have several of those, so it wasn't a problem.pThe only problem I had so far (besides the first DOA unit) is skipping with CD-RW. I guess the updated firmware may fix the problem. But it plays regular CD-Rs great, so I can't complain too much. And as cheap as the CDs are (especially if you are a frugal dude and don't mind doing rebates), CD-RWs aren't that important.pAnyway - get yours and enjoy! Four starts are only because of the DOA unit, otherwise this would be a 5-star unit.

A wonderful MP3 CD player. - S. Reinhardt - Cleveland, OH USA
I have two MP3 CD players - one by Jensen and this one by IRiver. This one was definitely worth the extra money. I love the firmware upgrade feature. I have done it several times over the last year. The in-line remote is very handy. My flash MP3 player is better for jogging than this CD player, but this one is great in the car and attached to the home stereo.br /br /We also use it like a boombox with external speakers in my daughter's room to play MP3 versions of her favorite music sometimes.br /br /I really like this CD player.

not good for a long lasting cd player - - New Jersey
ive had this cd player for a little less than a year and it has failed me. After about 6 months or so, the cd player wouldnt work. i would press play, and it would come up to the screen that says Iriver and then under it says "loading..."..and it would never go on...everytime it would never go on..so it was still under the warranty so i sent it back to the company and got a new one..about 2 months later...the play button did not work anymore...put brand new batteries in everytime...never worked...the player just wouldnt go on..battery life was HORRIBLE...heavy, and bulky..does not go loud at all..alright sound quality..otherwise..look for something else

Philips EXP2461 Personal CD/MP3 Player with 100-Second Electronic Skip Protection

Philips EXP2461 Personal CD/MP3 Player with 100-Second Electronic Skip Protection Review

Perhaps I was just lucky and got one of these that performed better than the ones that the other reviewers got. But this truly has been the best portable CD player that I have owned to date. br /br /I use rechargable NiMH batteries, so battery life for me was long enough to get about 6-10 hours of use out of this player.br /br /The anti-skip is very effective, I don't think I've ever heard a disc skip while using this player, even some of my more scratched ones. br /br /XBS is fantastic, the sound is rich and full and natural, comparable to Panasonic's SL-SX480, but with MUCH better skip protection on this model than the Panasonic model.br /br /Not to mention the overall look of the player is really quite nice, and it's built like a tank. Yes, it's heavy, but it's durable. In fact, it has been dropped by me on hard pavement about 10 times now, and it just BARELY quit working as a result. I bet your standard Sony wouldnt survive that many hard impacts. br /br /br /I was quite disappointed to have to buy a replacement CD player to this one because I'd dropped it one too many times. This was a wonderful player and none of the replacements that I have tried so far have been able to match its quality and anti skip protection. A really good model from Phillips.br /br /br /The only cons I have are as follows:br /br /the CD player does not remember your previous volume setting unless you change discs immediately. If you turn it off or allow it to turn off, you lose your volume setting. No big deal however.br /br /"BEEP" is turned "on" by default. Each time that you power-on the CD player, you must turn off the "BEEP" function or else you'll hear a beep each time you press any button on the player. I think BEEP is a rather useless feature and a pain to turn off each time you want to play a disc. br /br /br /Battery hog: I am aware that I would probably have gotten two or three days of battery use out of a comparable CD player on the market. This one gives you about 6-10 hours on a NiMH battery. On an alkaline I can only imagine it'd deliver about half that. So yeah, it is a battery hog. But it's still a good player. Invest in recharable batteries, they'll save you a lot of money in the long run. br /br /br /I don't know why the previous reviewers had so many problems with theirs, but mine served me well, and no replacement I've tried so far has matched it.

A Great Lil' Player - The Lunar Staff - Hee Haw Land, KS
This is a great CD player/MP3 Player, no doubt. The biggest complaint everyone seems to have is the battery life. Folks... it's no different than your cell phone... if you yap on it for 8 hours your going to have to recharge the battery. This goes for any battery operated item. A battery only holds so much charge, so the best investment you can buy is a rechargable battery set-up. We use the AA NiMH batteries on ours and have done so for the paste 3 years and it works great everytime. Generally getting about 10 hours of playtime. br /br /We mainly use these as a back-up CD players for our 20 Mobile DJ Set-ups. They have been a great third CD player and have come in handy on more than one occassion, especially when one of the main CD drives goes down. Out of the 20 we use in our systems we have only had to replace 3 of them. Mainly from misuse and abuse. They are very rugged and can take a helluva lotta abuse. We definitely put ours through the ringer.br /br /All in all, I have to say we're pretty satisfied with them. But for us, as a techie-heads, it's time to move on to the next big thing... Portable Blu-Ray players?!?

I'm not crazy about the color, but so far it seems to be working pretty well. There is still occasional skipping when I listen to audio books while I walk, but it's certainly a big improvement over my old CD players that didn't have this feature. Overall, it seems to be a good value for the money.

Panasonic SL-SX290 Portable CD Player

Panasonic SL-SX290 Portable CD Player Review

See more picture

This is a basic portable CD player that features CD-R/RW playability, 35-hour playback on 2 AA batteries (even cheap ones!), 40-second anti-skip system (cannot be turned off, unlike previous basic models from Panasonic), and three-phase equalizer (normal, bass boost, "train"). Of course, you can program the playlist as well as disable accidental button presses. It can play MP3s that are burned into audio CDs on CD-R/RW discs, but not MP3 files directly. No big deal since it's real easy to burn audio CDs anyway. The lid color is blue, and many people think it looks cute, but not overly so.pSolid build quality, excellent sound quality (esp. on good headphones), long battery life, and ease of use make this the best basic CD player out there today. Made in Japan with a great price tag.

Panasonic SL-SX290 Portable CD Player Feature

  • 40-second antiskip buffer and 24-track programmable CD memory
  • CD-R and CD-RW compatibility, 1-bit MASH digital-to-analog converter
  • Panasonic S-XBS bass boost
  • "Pop-up" disc eject, hold switch, and multiple playback modes
  • Heat-resistant polycarbonate body; up to 35 hours playback on 2 AA batteries (not included)
The Panasonic SL-SX290 portable CD player was made for active use, incorporating Panasonic's "No Skip" anti-skip system. "No Skip" construction was designed with rubber bushings to absorb the shock, while a thin and light anti-skip mechanism and anti-skip digital servo system add to the defense. It also boasts a digital-servo recovery system that can detect even a fractional difference in the CD's tracking and quickly recovers before it has a chance to "derail."P The system is bolstered by an improved set of error correction chips together with a 40-second backup memory buffer. When a vertical shock (along the axis of the disc) causes a tracking error, the system plays back music from the memory buffer until correct tracking resumes.P Since the SL-SX290 enables playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs, you can enjoy listening to CDs that you make in addition to conventional audio CDs. This unit also features programmable playback (up to 24 tracks, in your chosen sequence), random play, repeat play (either one song or an entire disc), as well as S-XBS bass boost and Train mode (which cuts high frequencies for less externally audible or less fatiguing sound). The player includes a "pop-up" disc eject mechanism for easy disc removal.P The CD player uses two AA batteries (not included), which last up to 35 hours. You can also power the unit with an optional 4.5V AC/DC adapter, which lets you plug your portable CD player into an outlet.P With a heat-resistant polycarbonate body, the SL-SX290 can be used in most outdoor settings without worry of damage. However, the unit should not be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.PbWhat's in the Box/bbr CD player, stereo headphones, and a user's manual. Panasonic brings a beautiful design and a wealth of features to this portable CD player with No-Skip system. The SL-SX290 is round and only slightly larger than a CD - it's thin, lightweight, and easy to take on the go. You can enjoy listening to CDs that you make, since this portable CD player enables playback of CD-R and CD-RW disks. Program this portable CD player to play a CD at random, in a specified order, or to repeat one song or the whole disk, letting you enjoy your favorite tunes without interruption. Extra Bass System (XBS) gives your music an added bass boost for fuller sound. The CD player can be used outdoors because of a heat-resistant body design. In order to load a CD, the top of the player fully opens, and a slide lock closes it back up once your CD is placed inside, making sure your player won't open during playback. An included pair of stereo headphones lets you enjoy your music to the fullest.

Very disappointing, and it all started out so well! - - New York
I was very impressed with this player at first. It was a bargain, and nice and lightweight. I was thrilled to find that even scratched CDs didn't skip and played well. However, I noticed after about two months (without having used it excessively), the CDs, even new ones, did not read as well as they had done at the start. 4 months later, it will play about 40 seconds of a song, and then the CD will just keep spinning with no sound, and no reading on the display save for the "Sorry" message. I was careful handling the product, and certainly didn't use it 24/7, so I can't understand why it doesn't function properly anymore. Now I have to search for another walkman!

Unexpected Features make this Player a Loser - - Forest Park, IL USA
I've had this CD player for over a year now, and it works OK, but I am pretty sick of a few of its unexpected "features", namely: (1) You have the volume on 3 while you listen to a CD. Then, you turn the player off. Then, you turn the player back on, but when it plays again, it plays at volume 13 for no apparent reason. Meanwhile, your ears get an unexpected blast. (2) You insert a new CD into the player and hit the play button. For no apparent reason, the player starts playing track #7 instead of track #1. (3) You play a CD with the bass-boost "off". Then, you turn the player off. Then, you turn the player back on again. You guessed it -- for no apparent reason, the bass-boost is now on.

Sony PSYC CD Walkman D-EJ360SILVER - CD player - silver

Sony PSYC CD Walkman D-EJ360SILVER - CD player - silver Review

See more picture

I purchased this CD player after my previous Sony Discman player (which I'd had for five or six years) finally gave up the ghost. I returned to the brand be cause my old player had served me so faithfully. I was pleased to find that this model has great sound quality and the same basic features my old player had, making it very easy to use. It also has GREAT battery life! Listening to between one and four CDs per day with this player, one set of batteries lasts me about a month! Much better than my old player! I was also pleased to find that this model will play slightly scratched CDs that my old player wouldn't, so it was a relief to know that I won't have to go out and buy new copies of those particular discs.pThere are a few drawbacks to this model, however. First and foremost, the "street style" headphones are torture devices - very uncomfortable. I bought myself a separate pair of "normal" Sony headphones to use with this player instead. Secondly, twice since I've had this player (I bought it shortly after Christmas of 2003) it has stopped in the middle of a CD for no apparent reason. This worries me a little, but except for these two instances the playback has always feen fine. Another reviewer mentioned problems playing CD-R and CD-RW discs - I myself have not yet tried this out with this model, so I can't vouch for whether it's a problem with the model as a whole, that reviewer's particular player, or something wrong with the CD itself. On the whole, though, if you're looking for an affordable, simple portable CD player with basic features, this is probably a good choice for you. Sleek Sony styling, Street Style Headphones, and fabulous features make the D-EJ360 CD Walkman Player a pleasure to look at and listen to. Featuring 40 hours of Long Playback with 2 "AA" batteries (not included), a 2-position Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS), 8 playback modes, a bookmark playback function for easy programming, a heat resistant lid, and CD-R/RW playback, this player places music management in your hand. Listen up as the Digital Mega Bass Sound System, Digital Volume Function, and skip free G-Protection enable absolutely awesome audio to go.

Will Last for Years - -
I've had this CD player for about 6 years and haven't had problems with it. This CD player will go through the deepest scratches like there isn't even a scratch there. It has great surround sound to give your music a cool effect. It is not sensitive to bumps on the road either, in fact you can hold it sideways and upside down. The only bad thing is that it's a little heavy. I recommend it to people who like simple controls and surround sound.

Nothing But Trouble - Person - across the street
I usually don't review discontinued items I own, but this item is so bad that I probably should. My old Walkman before I got this one (forgot the model #, it was excellent) was beat up very badly, it was on it's fourth year and I decided to pick up another one. I picked this up in spring 2003 since it had the same features, only a different look.br /br /I wish I would've looked around a bit before buying. No problems in the first month, everything played well. CDs to CD-Rs to CD-RWs, everything played flawless with excellent sound quality. Then things started to happen with CD-Rs and CD-RWs. I was playing a 20-track CD-R, and the last 2 tracks would skip like crazy nutso. I took out the CD-R and it didn't have any scratches whatsoever. I tried burning the music again...same problems. I played the CD-R in my computer and my old Walkman without any problems, so yes, it's the player. For then it was OK since I didn't have that many large track CDs. Then it keeped getting worse, not on the end tracks, but the whole CD. Then my old Walkman would play CDs way better than this. That was unacceptable. Then it came to the point that it wouldn't play anything burned. Funny, the SAME issue as an earlier reviewer (peenkparrot). I also tried cleaning the lens, first with a Memorex CD Lens Cleaner (with no result) and the rubbing alochol swab treatment that Sony recommends (with no result).br /br /Otherwise, the sound was decent, crystal clear. The buttons were easy, small but easy to learn. The headphones were decent. The CD player was durable, it's still in good condition (as far as the plastic goes).br /br /But as far as buying this, a definite NO!!! I have been trying CD players for a while now, and my favorites are the Panasonics (though I own an iRiver 20GB MP3 player that I use 99% of the time while listening to music). Unrecommended!!!

Well they were written up as green but they look yellow and the package says green too. But that doesn't matter, the important thing is that they are easy to use and work well. And they were here the next day. Other CD players that we have purchased at that price were sort of cheaply made. The only thing is we wish that the info panel or screen showing the track was on the top instead of the side edge. But price and quality is what we were interested in first and Sony gives that. RCA RP2472 Portable CD Player (Red) Review

Well, I've owned this for 8 months, and it's still in great shape. I've delete my old review, to write another review on this good CD player.br /br /Radio - 5/5 Starsbr /br /Good reception on most stations, considering I live 15 miles away from metro Tucson (Marana to be exact), so most players would usually black out signally this far, but I can listen to most stations within this distance. The radio sound quality is poor, as on any FM...anything. Though, I don't blame RCA. It's ClearChannel that needs to have their equalizer adjusted. The presets are easy to preset. I put every station in order on the presets from the way their presented from (87.5 - 107.9). Mainly because of the distance of where I live make it hard to get a signal on some stations, making the seek feature skip some stations.br /br /Sound/Bass Boost - 4/5 Starsbr /br /The bass and treble are NO problem whatsoever. The bass boost is truly effective. The gripe is that the volume, even on the highest setting, is kind of quiet. Anyway, great sound. Just a low peak volume.br /br /CD Player - 5/5 Starsbr /br /The player has skipped barely, if not at all. All my CDs play fine, even the ones most scratched of all play well. Great player - -
I'm very suprised by the amount of negative reviews of this CD player. It's wonderful! It's just awesome because you can listen to a CD and then the radio at the same time. The red color has little mini sparkles and they look so cool. The headphones aren't to good, and I would recommend a different pair. The skip-protection actually works, unlike most CD players that have this option. The presets on the radio are convinent and easy to set and use. I would recommend anyone to buy this CD player. It's just awesome.
